First Team:
The first team have had a tough start to the scratch league this season, starting with back to back away games both games finished with unlucky 4.5 – 3.5 losses. At Park Hill in the opening game, team Captain Alan Turton was all square playing the last, he hit is approach in and looked set to have a tap in birdie until the ball pitched straight into the flagstick and careered off the green leaving a tough up and down. Unfortunately Alan’s par attempt just missed leaving his opponent to make a relieved par and sneak a 1 up win.
On to Rutland County and again a close match with a couple of games going to the wire but that elusive half point evaded the team and the narrowest of losses was recorded. Next up were Melton Mowbray, a welcome home game. A fairly strong Ullesthorpe side took to the fairways and made home advantage tell with a convincing 5.5 – 2.5 victory and getting off the mark for the season.
As can be expected this year the British summer had its way for the 4th game with a late afternoon downpour flooding the greens before a home fixture with Beedles Lake, this has now been rearranged.
So off on the travels for the 3rd time in 4 games and to Willesley Park, arguably the strongest squad in the division, with the top 3 all unavailable it was always going to be a tough game for Ullesthorpe and so it proved on the night and a miserable 8 – 0 return.
Back at home again and a chance to redeem the pride, facing Park Hill who had managed to take maximum points from their first 5 games it was not going to be an easy night against a team full of confidence. And so it proved, with only half a point to show from the top four Ullesthorpe seemed to be struggling, but a great rearguard performance saw the final four all win their games and snatch a 4.5 – 3.5 triumph and take some of the injustice away from the opening game defeat to the same opponents.
The lads now face a crucial period with the rearranged home game to Beedles Lake and home to Rutland County before travelling to Melton Mowbray and the return with Beedles Lake, the season could then hinge on a crucial home game against Willesley Park.
Good luck to the team for the rest of the season!
Finham Bowl:
David Evrall took part in the Finham Bowl at Coventry Golf Club on Sunday 8th July. With all the recent wet weather the course was playing long and the rough was to be avoided but the club had done a great job to present the course in such good condition. David got off to a solid start and coming down the last in the morning round was 1 under, unfortunately a poor tee shot lead to a double bogey and a 1 over total, leaving him 4 behind the early leader. With a back 9 start in the afternoon, David again gave himself plenty of chances but couldn’t find the bottom of the cup. Standing on the 18th again (9th of the round) a better tee shot was produced leading to an 8 foot birdie putt and turning 1 under, further birdies on the 1st, 4th, 7th and 8th with a solitary bogey on the 3rd meant a best of the day 4 under total. This was an aggregate of 3 under and a 4th place finish in the Midland Order of Merit event.
