The Matchplay Championship

Congratulations to Club Member Gareth Watkins who has recently returned from Dubai having reached the Grand Finals of the Matchplay Championship.

The Matchplay Championship is the UK’s biggest amateur golf tournament and a new category for the 2011/12 running of the competition was a Single tournament.

Gareth, along with well over a thousand other hopefuls, entered back in June 2011 with the thought of Dubai a distant pipedream.  After safely and successfully negotiating 5 separate matchplay rounds throughout the winter months Gareth had a date at the Forest of Arden to try and reach Dubai.  Gareth, playing off a 5 handicap, returned a highly respectable 34 points on a damp April day on the tough Arden Championship course to secure 3rd place and one of the four qualifying spots from the Regional final.

A total of 8 people qualified for the Singles final in Dubai, all enjoying luxury 5* accommodation and the opportunity to compete over the Els Course in Dubai all as part of the grand prize.  Gareth performed admirably over the 3 round Stableford Competition, improving each day to record a highly respectable 97 points aggregate.  This gave Gareth 4th place in the competition, an absolutely fantastic achievement and one I’m sure all members will join in saying a big CONGRATULATIONS!

72 Hole Challenge

On the longest day of the year, Thursday 21st June, four brave soles embarked on a challenge to test the hardiest and keenest golfers.  Our Club Captain, Pete Towers, Lady Captain, Carol Doyle, Vice Captain, Bill Leithead, and Past Captain & President, Alison Horak, were up at the crack of dawn as they attempted to play four different courses in one day, not for pleasure but to raise money for the Captains Charity.

At 5.00am with the sun only just rising the first tee shots were struck at Whetstone Golf Club, a brisk round ensued with the deadline of a 9.00am tee at Kirby Muxloe awaiting.  After successfully negotiating two courses and grabbing food where possible the intrepid four ball started their 3rd 18 holes of the day at Lutterworth GC.  The great British weather played its part on the day with a mixture of cold grey skies, showers and the occasional glimmer of sunshine but arriving back at Ullesthorpe for 7.00pm it was, typically, showers.  The final 18 holes must have felt like a real slog, but the members joined in the spirit and cheered the four down the last hole as they finished in the fast fading light.  A grateful pint was had by all to complete the day.

We would like to thank Whetstone, Kirby Muxloe and Lutterworth for their hospitality and courtesy of the course on the day and especially thank all those who donated to the cause, which certainly helped our four ball complete this marathon day!

LATEST RESULTS

First Team:

The first team have had a tough start to the scratch league this season, starting with back to back away games both games finished with unlucky 4.5 – 3.5 losses.  At Park Hill in the opening game, team Captain Alan Turton was all square playing the last, he hit is approach in and looked set to have a tap in birdie until the ball pitched straight into the flagstick and careered off the green leaving a tough up and down.  Unfortunately Alan’s par attempt just missed leaving his opponent to make a relieved par and sneak a 1 up win.

On to Rutland County and again a close match with a couple of games going to the wire but that elusive half point evaded the team and the narrowest of losses was recorded.  Next up were Melton Mowbray, a welcome home game.  A fairly strong Ullesthorpe side took to the fairways and made home advantage tell with a convincing 5.5 – 2.5 victory and getting off the mark for the season.

As can be expected this year the British summer had its way for the 4th game with a late afternoon downpour flooding the greens before a home fixture with Beedles Lake, this has now been rearranged.

So off on the travels for the 3rd time in 4 games and to Willesley Park, arguably the strongest squad in the division, with the top 3 all unavailable it was always going to be a tough game for Ullesthorpe and so it proved on the night and a miserable 8 – 0 return.

Back at home again and a chance to redeem the pride, facing Park Hill who had managed to take maximum points from their first 5 games it was not going to be an easy night against a team full of confidence.  And so it proved, with only half a point to show from the top four Ullesthorpe seemed to be struggling, but a great rearguard performance saw the final four all win their games and snatch a 4.5 – 3.5 triumph and take some of the injustice away from the opening game defeat to the same opponents.

The lads now face a crucial period with the rearranged home game to Beedles Lake and home to Rutland County before travelling to Melton Mowbray and the return with Beedles Lake, the season could then hinge on a crucial home game against Willesley Park.

Good luck to the team for the rest of the season!

Finham Bowl:

David Evrall took part in the Finham Bowl at Coventry Golf Club on Sunday 8th July.  With all the recent wet weather the course was playing long and the rough was to be avoided but the club had done a great job to present the course in such good condition.  David got off to a solid start and coming down the last in the morning round was 1 under, unfortunately a poor tee shot lead to a double bogey and a 1 over total, leaving him 4 behind the early leader.  With a back 9 start in the afternoon, David again gave himself plenty of chances but couldn’t find the bottom of the cup.  Standing on the 18th again (9th of the round) a better tee shot was produced leading to an 8 foot birdie putt and turning 1 under, further birdies on the 1st, 4th, 7th and 8th with a solitary bogey on the 3rd meant a best of the day 4 under total.  This was an aggregate of 3 under and a 4th place finish in the Midland Order of Merit event.

WORLD CUP REFEREES HELP MAKE SECOND ANNUAL LV= SOS KIT AID GOLF DAY A HUGE SUCCESS

Following on from the success of Golf Days in the South West, BEST WESTERN PLUS Ullesthorpe Court Hotel and Golf Club played host to LV= SOS Kit Aid’s second highly successful golf day in Leicestershire on the 24 May. 25 teams took part from all over the UK including four teams from the RFU's Professional Referee Unit.

During the evening, World Cup referees Wayne Barnes and Dave Pearson entertained the crowd with anecdotal tales from their refereeing experiences facilitated by ex-International referee Chris White. The day, assisted by Mediterranean temperatures, much like the evening was a huge success with the foursome named 'Halcyon Daze' claiming victory.

Since its inception in May 2011, LV= SOS Kit Aid was voted ‘best community recycling initiative’ at the Awards for Excellence and has received the backing of Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Sports Minister, Hugh Robertson. The scheme has seen schools, clubs and the public donate their unwanted rugby and cricket kit to give disadvantaged children access to sport and create opportunities which would not have previously been available.

Regional Director and organiser of the day, Gary Welsh, said: “The support we received from around the UK was brilliant with teams coming from as far afield as Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. Attendance was up 30% on last year which in these austere times is very special and will enable us to afford numerous additional kit deliveries across the globe to disadvantaged youngsters. Next year will be a challenge again to make the event even bigger and better, a challenge that we are relishing!”
